Bandwidth – How much is required for you?

Filed under: Bandwidth — Newbiesite Admin @ 6:40 am

By knowing what you plan to do with your hosting account, you can have a pretty good idea of how much bandwidth you’re going to need. If you anticipate that you will be needing to serve lots of multimedia including video, music and large amounts of flash powered pages, you may need to consider going with high end bandwidth usage. If your website is just starting out and you have little money and no real idea of how much bandwidth you’re going to need, pick a company which allows you to upgrade the bandwidth to any extend.

To calculate how much bandwidth you need, you simply sum up the total size of your website, and get the average size of a web page. Then, you estimate how many visitors per day. For example, a home page sums up to 30 kb. And, the home page gets 100 visitors per day. The bandwidth of the home page equals 3,000 kilobyte (30 kilobyte x 100 visitors). In a month, the home page needs 90 megabyte (3,000 kilobyte x 30 days).

File downloading

While offering simple web pages doesn’t use up much bandwidth, the same can’t be said about downloading files. If you plan on allowing people to download music files, pdf files, flash files, or video files, the bandwidth consumption will be too high and may result in site down.. If your website offers an adobe .pdf file that is 1 megabyte in size, with one gigabyte of bandwidth, you will only be able to serve up one thousand downloads.

Video files eat up even more space. A one megabyte video file represents only seconds of video. For a half hour presentation, your video file could easily be over two hundred megabytes in size! At that size, one gigabyte would only allow you to offer five downloads to your visitors. What you plan to do with your website most definitely will affect how much monthly bandwidth you anticipate needing.

Server Log

Many Webmasters have never bothered to view their website’s server log. You may still be cruising along, but you have no idea where you are or where you’re headed. Most sites offer you the server log. You can take it as a criteria for choosing your domain registrar.

Together with the uptime guarantee , a good host provides you server log . A web server log can tell you who is visiting your web site, where they’re coming from, what operating system and web browser they’re using, what pages of your website they are viewing, and much more. A smart webmaster performs a regular monthly analysis of the valuable information contained in the server log.

Hits

The important statistics are “page view hits” and “unique visitors”. Server log analysis software should tell you how many times each page was viewed. Analyzing the popularity of individual pages tells you where to place your most important advertisements, and what kind of new content you should add to your website.

The king of all statistics is the number of unique visitors your web site receives. When it comes to selling advertising or joining the most exclusive affiliate programs, a high number of unique visitors each month is the statistic that gets respect.

Good analysis software will tell you how many pages each visitor viewed and how long they stayed on your website. The goal is to develop content that gets your visitors to stay longer, a quality sometimes referred to as “stickiness”.

A statistic related to hits is “bandwidth”. This is a complicated statistic because you want more visitors and that causes bandwidth to go up. On the other hand, high bandwidth consumption makes your website respond slower . What you want is to design your web pages so they use bandwidth efficiently, and you want to be on the lookout for people who are stealing your bandwidth (usually by linking to images on your web site).

Referrers

Good server log analysis software will provide you with the URLs of the webpages that people clicked on to get to your website. This is extremely valuable information. If you are receiving a high volume of traffic from another website, you can almost consider that website to be your business partner. It would be to your advantage to find ways to make your website more useful to the referring website. For example, learn what the topic of the referring website is and place more related content on your website.

One common method of aiding referrers is to place a reciprocal link on your website. However, don’t bother placing the reciprocal link on a “links” page with hundreds of other links (a link farm). If you can’t provide an honest reciprocal link, it’s better to do nothing. An honest reciprocal link might be a page containing a review of the referrer’s website, and that page should contain only a few other links.

Search Strings

Good server log analysis software will provide you with the keywords and search strings people entered at a search site to find your website. One way to get more traffic to your website is to provide more content related to the top keywords. If getting more traffic is your single goal, there are websites that will provide you with a list of the current most popular keywords entered into search engines. Then you can provide more content related to those keywords. This gets involved with the subject of “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO).

How to save bandwidth?

You need to take it into consideration at the time of website design. If you are looking to save the bandwidth you should put all photos in the JPEG format and all graphics in GIF format. By doing so you are compressing the files using only the very least bandwidth required

What will happen if I do not have enough bandwidth?

If your website doesn’t have enough bandwidth, it may end up in two ways. Your website will download onto peoples monitors very slowly and the chances are they will not wait around. The second problem is that your web site may only be viewed by a very limited audience at one time. Always choose a host who provides facility to upgrade bandwidth.

How can I ensure that this will not happen to me?

Undoubtedly it is very frustrating to spend time and money developing a good informative website only to have it’s viewing reduced by lack of bandwidth. You need to be honest with your web host company and tell them the number of pages and how large your overall files are, by doing this the onus is on them to offer you the service your require. If you decide to go it cheap and risk the low bandwidth you are only fooling yourself. Look at the rates from the different web host companies for extra bandwidth and you will be pleasantly surprised that it will not cost an arm and a leg to have a little extra. Knowingly going over bandwidth with only cost you revenue in the long run and makes your website very unprofessional. If you are hosting with a reliable web host company they will not allow this happen anyway.
