Various website publishing tools and its usage

In this article, lets have a look on how to publish websites through various publishing tools like WebDave, Expression Web, FTP etc in detail.

1. WebDav

WebDAV stands for “Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning”. It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol which allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers.
Lets see how to publish website with WebDave on the below Operating Systems:
For Windows 8:
1. Open My Computer folder. Click the Computer tab and select Map Network Drive.
2. When the Map Network Drive wizard appears, enter your domain name or IP address of your web server (For eg: http://domainname.com) then click Finish.
3. Now you will be prompted for username and password:
If your account is on Windows 2008 platform, please use the user name (UPN) of your default web server user and the password of this user.
If your account is on Windows 2003/2000 platform, please use credentials of your existing Site User.
4. Once these steps have been completed, the networked drive should open in Windows Explorer.

For Windows Vista/Windows 7:
1. Open the Map Network Drive wizard, by any of the below technics:
Opening a folder in Windows Explorer >> Tools >> Map Network Drive.
Opening the Network and Sharing Center in the Windows Control Panel >> Tools >> Map Network Drive.
Right-clicking on the desktop icons for Computer or Network >> Map Network Drive.
2. When the Map Network Drive wizard appears, enter your domain name or IP address of your web server (For eg: http://domainname.com) then click Finish.
3. Now you will be prompted for username and password:
If your account is on Windows 2008 platform, please use the user name (UPN) of your default web server user and the password of this user

If your account is on Windows 2003/2000 platform, please use credentials of your existing Site User.
4. Once these steps have been completed, the networked drive should open in Windows Explorer.

For Windows XP:
1. Open Windows Explorer. Double click My Network Places.
2. Double-click Add Network Place.
3. Click Next.
4. Choose ‘Choose another network location’ option and click Next.
5. Enter your domain name or IP address of your web server (For eg: http://domainname.com) and click Next.
6. Now you will be prompted for username and password:
If your account is on Windows 2008 platform, please use the user name (UPN) of your default web server user and the password of this user
If your account is on Windows 2003/2000 platform, please use credentials of your existing Site User.
7. Give a name for the connection and click “Next”.
8. Click “Finish”.
9. Inorder to make a connection , go to My Network Places and double click the connection you created.

10. To publish your web site using WebDav connection via Microsoft Expression Web please take the following steps:
a) Open File and click Publish Site.
b) Select WebDav and enter your domain name or IP address of your web server (For eg: http://domainname.com) into Remote Web site location and click OK.
c) Now you will be prompted for username and password

2. Expression Web

FrontPage Server extensions are not required to create or publish the website via Expression Web.
Follow the below steps to upload your website from your local computer to the remote server via Expression Web:
1. Launch Expression Web
2. Click File > Open Site.
3. Browse to your website located on the local drive.
4. Click File > Publish Web site.
You can also edit your hosted website directly on the server via Expression Web following the below steps:
1. Click File > Open Site.
2. Use one of the following URLs to open your website:
Domain name ftp://www.domain.com OR IP address of your web server ftp://ip address here/.
3. Now enter the credentials of your site user.

3. FileZilla To Connect to remote server

Here lets see how to perform the following actions using FileZilla client:
a) Connecting to your FTP server
1. Launch Filezilla
2. Type in the settings as below:
Host: Enter the hostname (Server name or server IP)
Username: Enter the username (username@domain.com)
Password: Enter the password
Port: leave this field blank
3. Click on Quickconnect button.
FileZilla will then connect to the server and the remote pane (window in the right hand side) will switch from Not connected to any server to displaying a list of files and directories on the server

b) Uploading and downloading

To upload or download files or directories:
1. Select the files/directories
2. Drag them from the Local pane (left side) to the Remote pane (right side window), or vice versa to download
or
1. Right click the file/directory
2. Select Upload (or Download to download)
The files will be then added to the Transfer queue at the bottom of the window, uploaded to the server and displayed in the Remote pane.

c) Using the Site Manager
To set up connection profiles to make connecting to remote servers quicker and easier you may add the server information to the Site Manager. To do this:
1. Select File > Copy current connection to Site Manager…. The site manager will be opened and a new entry will be created with all the required settings already filled in.
2. Enter some descriptive name so you will later on find your server again.
3. Close the dialogue by clicking on OK.

The next time you want to connect to this server:
1.Click on Open the Site Manager button or select File > Site Manager
2.Highlight the profile name and click Connect.
